It is still
clear in my mind how my grandmother suffered under wrath of Alzheimer’s
disease. When she was still alive I remember how my family and I would talked
to her and reminded her about precious memories we spent with her but we knew
that time that we could only do so much. I cannot imagine until now how disease
ruined the memories of my grandmother who used to be cheerful and strong.
According to MacGill (2013) “Alzheimer's
disease is a neurological disorder in which the death of brain cells causes
memory loss and cognitive decline. A neurodegenerative type of dementia, the
disease starts mild and gets progressively worse.” This disease is caused by brain cell death
and categorized as a neurodegenerative disease. When one is detected with
Alzheimer’s disease the original size of his brain shrinks as time passes by
and tissue has progressively fewer
nerve cells connection. This disease occurs in individuals ages 65 above and
mostly women are the victims of this disease.
Below are the symptoms of
Alzheimer’s disease:
- Impairments to reasoning, complex tasking, exercising judgment
- Worsened ability to take in and remember new information.
- Impaired visuospatial abilities (but not, for example, due to eye sight problems).
- Impaired speaking, reading and writing.
- Changes in personality and behavior
Every time I remember how my grandmother suffered from Alzheimer’s I pray
to God that one day we’ll wake up and cure for this disease is available. What
I hate about Alzheimer’s is that it takes away our love ones experiencing this
by ruining their memories. Yes, we have them physically but it hurts to see
them being naïve because they cannot remember anything even their names. A
piece of advice, if one of your family members has this disease never show them
sadness instead, try your best to tell them how beautiful their journey was than
showing them how sorry you are seeing them suffering from Alzheimer’s.
